It was HUGE, at least 5 inches long! Having no clue what it was, I took photos (of course!) and then we moved it to the wooded area between our houses. Beth mused to herself, "Where hims going? Probably to find his mommy and daddy." Upon further investigation (google!) I found that it's a hickory horned devil, and he was just looking for a nice place to bury himself! He's completely harmless, though he sure doesn't look that way!
